He was staying right beside the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa. More to the point, he had booked dinner at Le Lotus, the resort's fine dining restaurant, for that same evening. He wanted somewhere high up to ask his question.

The answer chose itself: the resort's lookout, above the lagoon. Convenient too, since he was dining there that night.

We set up a small piece of theatre. Jon suggested a stroll through the gardens with his partner. We waited up top, posing as ordinary tourists. He walked over and asked us to take a photo of the two of them. That was the signal.

And there, above the lagoon, above the resort, above the very restaurant where they would celebrate a few hours later, he dropped to one knee.

Maria never saw it coming. We were already there, keeping all of it.
