Your baby's first photo was taken before they were born
There's something most couples don't realize when they book a maternity photoshoot.
You think you're taking photos of yourself. Of your belly, of this changing silhouette, of this moment suspended between two lives. And that's true. But it's not the whole story.
Because one day, ten or fifteen years from now, a child will open that gallery. They'll look at these images of the lagoon, this white dress in the breeze, this hand resting on a round belly. And they'll simply say...
"That was me, right there."
A maternity session isn't a photo of a pregnant woman. It's your child's first image. The one that existed before they did.
Why this moment is unlike any other
Pregnancy is a strange thing: you live it intensely, but you rarely see it. You experience it from the inside. The days go by, your body changes, and often... almost nothing remains of this chapter. A few blurry phone pictures. A bathroom mirror.
Yet this might be the only time in your life when you literally carry your story with you.
And if you're expecting during your trip to French Polynesia, or planning a babymoon here, this moment takes on a whole new dimension. The lagoon at dawn, the light slowly rising over the mountain, the silence before the island wakes up... This is a setting that never overwhelms. It embraces.
Sunrise, the golden hour for moms-to-be
I only shoot at golden hour, sunrise or sunset. And for maternity sessions, morning is my clear favorite.
Sunrise light is the softest of the day. It flatters the skin, softens every feature, draws the curves without ever hardening them. And the air is still cool. When you're carrying a baby, that comfort matters: no heavy tropical heat, no fatigue settling in. Just you, the still morning water, and all the time you need.
Because yes, we take our time. I never watch the clock. A maternity session moves at your pace, with breaks whenever you need them. You set the rhythm, I read the light.
This particular session with Clémentine and Arthur took place at the Tahiti Lagoon Resort, between the infinity pool and the overwater bungalows, in the quiet of early morning. A setting that mirrors itself in the water just like in the images... and gives every photo that unmistakable Polynesian softness.
"We had never done this before"
It's usually the first worry couples share with me: we're not comfortable in front of a camera, we won't know what to do.
Good news... you don't need to know anything. Guiding you, gesture after gesture, until you completely forget I'm there, that's my job. Clémentine and Arthur experienced it recently, and their words tell the story better than I could:
"Simply incredible. Nicolas was wonderful from the very first exchanges, we felt confident even though this was completely new to us and we weren't very comfortable with the idea. In the end, it was a privileged session at sunrise. Nico was a great guide, helping us flow through the session, it was amazing. We received the photos quickly, and that's the hardest part: how do you pick a favorite...? They're all incredible! Thank you again." — Clémentine & Arthur
In the end, the hardest part is choosing your favorite. I'll admit, that's the kind of problem I love creating.
What your child will see
They won't see a "photoshoot". They'll see their mom, beautiful and serene, by a Polynesian lagoon. They'll see two people who were already waiting for them. They'll see where they come from.
That's what a visual legacy means. Not images you look at once before they disappear into a folder. Images that travel through time, that get passed down, that tell the very beginning of a story... theirs.
And from the moment you book, everything is designed so you arrive feeling calm and ready: we talk about your vision, and you receive my complete preparation guide with my advice on outfits, locations and planning. On the day itself, all that's left to do is live the moment.
If you're expecting and this idea speaks to you, just send me a message on WhatsApp. We'll talk it through, no strings attached, and I'll tell you everything.
And to discover more sunrise stories, the journal is waiting for you.
