Elope in Moorea: your complete French Polynesia guide
Moorea elopement photographer: everything you need to know before your symbolic ceremony in french Polynesia
By Amélie — Nicolas Hirigoyen Photographer
Planning an elopement in Moorea is one of the most beautiful decisions a couple can make. No guest list to manage. No venue to book. No officiant required. Just the two of you, a beach that stops you in your tracks, and the words you've chosen for each other.
I've been by Nicolas's side for every one of these sessions. And what couples tell us after is always the same thing.
"We had no idea it could be this simple. And this powerful."
This is everything we wish someone had told you before.
Can you legally get married on a beach in Moorea without an officiant?
Yes. And this is often the first question people don't dare to ask.
In French Polynesia, nothing prevents you from standing on a beach, taking each other's hands, and saying out loud what you feel. No permit required. No officiant. No paperwork. This is what we call a symbolic ceremony — or an elopement, as most of our American couples refer to it.
You choose the words. You choose the place. You choose the moment.
Moorea is still largely untouched by mass tourism. Public beaches remain wild, accessible, and nearly pristine. We arrive at sunrise, the beach is empty, the light is unlike anything else. Sometimes a few fresh flowers placed on the sand. That's often all it takes.
One thing to keep in mind: nature has its own rhythm. The swell, the wind, a fisherman passing by. We don't control everything — and honestly, that's part of what makes these moments feel alive and real.
Best locations for an elopement in Moorea, French Polynesia
Moorea offers exceptional natural settings for an intimate ceremony. Here's how to choose what feels right for you.
Tahiamanu Beach — Opunohu Bay
White sand, coconut palms, turquoise lagoon. One of the most beautiful public beaches on the island. We love it at sunrise before the first visitors arrive — the light is soft, the water is still, and the mountains in the background make every frame extraordinary.
Tiahura Motu
Accessible by boat, completely isolated, open views over the open ocean. Some of our most silent and emotionally charged sessions have happened here. When you're standing on a strip of sand surrounded by water, with nothing around you, something shifts.
Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay
For couples who want the mountain backdrop — dense tropical vegetation, dramatic peaks, something more mysterious than the lagoon. A completely different mood, and just as breathtaking.
The right location depends on what you want to feel, not on what looks best in a photo. We always talk about it together before the session.
When to plan your symbolic ceremony in Moorea
This is always my first question. Always.
The light in Moorea doesn't negotiate. And the timing of your ceremony will shape everything — not just the images, but the experience itself.
Sunset — The most requested option
Golden light, soft warmth, a lagoon that shifts through every shade of blue and pink. In practice: ceremony around 4pm, couple session through sunset between 5:30 and 6:30pm depending on the season. It flows naturally. It's what Moorea does best.
Sunrise — A Different experience entirely
This is for the brave ones. And we've done it. It's unforgettable.
We meet at 6:30am. The beach is truly empty — as if it exists only for you. The light is soft, almost unreal. And at 7am, we open champagne facing a lagoon that's just waking up.
By 7:30 or 8am, depending on the season, the heat arrives quickly. That's exactly why we start early — we work in the best possible conditions, and you leave with the entire day ahead of you. A boat trip on the lagoon, a lunch somewhere you'd never have found alone, a drone session over the motus.
Sunrise is demanding. It's also something you never forget.
Can you add drone photography in Moorea?
Yes. And in Moorea especially, it changes everything.
From above, you see what no ground-level lens can capture: the shape of the motus, the gradient of turquoise from reef to shore, the sailboats anchored in the bay — and the two of you at the center of all of it.
Nicolas is a certified professional drone pilot, fully compliant with the French Polynesian regulations that came into force on January 1, 2026. This matters more than it might seem. Moorea's airspace is classified, authorized flight zones are limited, and many tourist sites are in controlled airspace.
We're often asked by visiting couples whether they can fly their own drone in Moorea. The short answer: it's heavily regulated since 2026, and the rules are strictly enforced. An unauthorized drone in a restricted zone means no images — and potentially a fine.
Drone coverage is available as an add-on to your session. We plan the flight from our very first conversation.
What actually happens during a session with us in Moorea?
Before
Once you book, you receive our 35-page preparation guide. What to wear, which light to choose, how to mentally prepare, location recommendations. Everything you need to arrive calm and confident.
During
Nicolas photographs. I capture the behind-the-scenes — in video, vertical format, the small moments between moments. You adjusting your dress without thinking. Him watching you without you noticing. The champagne we open at 7am facing the lagoon.
After
Within 24 hours, you receive all raw video footage in your private gallery. A few days later, a 90-second edited film with music chosen for you — ready to share or keep. And within 15 to 20 days, your complete photo gallery: 75 images minimum, fully edited, nothing extra to add.
Video content is an option, not included by default — because not everyone needs it. But those who choose it never regret it.
What our couples say after
"From the very beginning, Nicolas was incredibly responsive. When we finally met in Tahiti, they immediately made us feel comfortable and at ease in front of the camera, which really shows in the beautiful photos we received." — Melissa
"The photos are absolutely stunning: natural, full of emotion, perfectly composed. A true work of artists. We highly recommend this experience to all couples." — Valérie & Gabriel
