A Moorea wedding, from pineapple fields to the lagoon
Most couples look for a venue. Shenae and Michael were looking for an island.
Their idea was simple, and a little wild: don't get married in one spot, make all of Moorea the backdrop for the day. From the pineapple-covered hills down to the sand, following the light from one place to the next. We built it together, piece by piece.
We started where they woke up
We met outside their rental, the beautiful Legend Resort Airbnb.
It's often the best place to begin. No dress yet, no nerves yet, just two people in the spot where they'd dropped their bags. We eased into it from there, before hitting the road.
An adventure through the pineapple fields
First stop, the plantations climbing the hillsides.
Few people picture Moorea as pineapple country, and yet. Green rows running up toward the ridgelines, mist still hanging over the peaks, that soft morning light setting everything in relief. We walked between the plants, we took our time. Nothing expected here, no beach on the horizon, just the two of them in a landscape no one connects with a wedding. That's exactly what makes these frames stand apart.
A stop at Saint Joseph chapel in Cook's Bay
Before the hotel, we pulled over in Cook's Bay.
Saint Joseph chapel is one of the oldest on the island. You go from the wide open sweep of the plantations to something entirely different: an enclosed, quiet space where the light comes in another way. That contrast is what gives a day its breathing room. A moment almost suspended, right before the ceremony. And the bay all around, its mountains dropping straight into the water, a reminder of exactly where you are.
The traditional ceremony at the Sofitel
Then we made our way to the Sofitel Moorea, for the heart of the day.
The traditional ceremony is the moment the island speaks. The chanting, the gestures, the words in Tahitian, everything that roots a union in the culture of this place. Shenae and Michael had come a long way to marry here, and they wanted it to truly mean something. Not postcard folklore, but a real rite of passage. You feel it in every frame.
Private vows, just the two of them, away from everyone
Then, just them.
We slipped off to a quiet stretch of the hotel's beach, out of sight. No audience, no rows of chairs. Only the sound of the lagoon and two voices talking to each other. Those private vows, spoken low, are often where the real tears come. My job in that exact moment is to disappear enough that they forget I'm there, and stay present enough to miss nothing.
And to close it, the view from above
We finished by rising into the sky.
The drone doesn't add one more image, it adds scale. That wide shot placing two figures back inside the vastness of the lagoon, the reef in the distance, the line of white water, those blues you only really see from up high. It's what closes their story beautifully: the two of them, tiny and essential, in the middle of it all.
