The lighthouse, next. In service since 1867, the first lighthouse in the South Pacific and the only one on Tahiti, it slips into the frame like a landmark, a story already there. Few beaches offer a backdrop this strong, at once natural and full of memory. It stands on Matavai Bay, where James Cook came to watch the transit of Venus in 1769. The name has stuck ever since.

A family I've followed for years
That's the case with Nanihi and Torea's family. They live right by Point Venus, and this beach is part of their everyday life. So it was the natural place for their first family session.
And it wasn't the first time we'd met. Six years ago, I photographed their eldest, Manoa, when she was tiny. This year they came back, with their new arrival, Molokai. Manoa is a big sister now. Watching a family grow like this, session after session, is one of the loveliest parts of this work.
What time of day should you photograph at Point Venus?
Sunrise or sunset. Never high noon. Two good reasons, here more than anywhere.
The light, of course. At the end of the day it turns soft and golden, and the black sand makes the most of it.
And the sand itself. Being black, it heats up fast in the sun. At midday it is scorching under little bare feet, and the heat wears everyone down. Early morning or late afternoon is gentle, comfortable, and the beach is quieter too.
The right hour is already half the work. The rest is you.
How to prepare for a family session on the beach
A few simple reflexes.
Outfits. Think coordinated, not matching. Natural, light tones, linen, two or three colors that answer each other. Against black sand, light shades look wonderful.
Flowers. A lei, a crown, a few blooms in the hair. Simple, local, and it dresses an image instantly.
The little ones' timing. Pick a slot away from naps and hunger. A rested, well-fed child is a child who's up for it.
The rest is on us. The flow, the ideas, the pace. You arrive calm, and it shows in every photo.
What you really keep
A beach a stone's throw from home. A family that grows, year after year. And that lighthouse in the background, still standing twenty years from now, when you open these images again.
