Anniversary photos in Moorea, at the Tipaniers pier

Ask a couple married for twenty or thirty years when they last had a real photo of the two of them.

Not the kids. Not the view from the hotel balcony. The two of them.

Most will have to think about it.

Véronique and Lolo decided to fix that. 25 years of marriage, a trip to French Polynesia to celebrate, and one morning set aside for themselves, at a place many travelers already know: the Tipaniers pier, in Moorea.

Why an anniversary trip deserves its own photos

For years, you were the one holding the phone. Birthdays, graduations, holidays. Everyone else ended up in the frame.

An anniversary trip is often the first time in a long while that it is just the two of you again. No schedule built around anyone else. No one waiting.

That is worth keeping. Not as a souvenir of the trip. As a picture of who you are together, now.

The Tipaniers pier, a Moorea classic

The pier sits at Hauru Point, on the northwest coast of the island, in front of the Les Tipaniers hotel.

An old wooden pier, weathered by salt and sun, running out over a shallow lagoon. White sand underneath. Water that turns from clear to turquoise within a few steps. And across the lagoon, two small motu covered in green.

You have probably seen it already, somewhere on your feed, while planning this trip.

Véronique and Lolo, years later

Véronique wore a loose, sand-colored dress and a bright flower crown. Lolo, a light patterned shirt. Nothing complicated.

With a newer couple, it can take a while before the gestures come naturally. With them, it took no time at all. Everything was already there.

At one point, he pulled her across the sand by the hand. She laughed. I had not asked for anything.

Later, they sat at the end of the pier, legs above the water. They looked out at the motu without saying a word. Then he kissed her on the cheek, the way you do after all those years, without thinking about it.

That is the kind of moment I wait for. The gesture a couple has made so many times they no longer notice it.

Will your photos look like everyone else's?

It is a fair question. If everyone takes pictures at the same pier, why would yours be different?

Because we will not take the same picture.

The pier can be seen head on, from the side, from the sand, from the water, from behind. Step back, and it becomes a single line across the landscape. Step closer, and all that is left is the wood and your hands.

With Véronique and Lolo, we used all of it. The pier, then the sand, then feet in the water, then back to the wood, at the very end, facing the motu.

A well-known place does not make an ordinary image. What happens between two people, in the right light, does.

What to know before you fly

Timing. I only shoot at sunrise or sunset. At the pier, it makes all the difference. The light is soft, the lagoon shows its best shades of blue, and there are far fewer people than at midday. With Véronique and Lolo, we went for morning.

Your body clock helps. Tahiti runs two to three hours behind the West Coast, five to six behind the East Coast. You will be up early the first few days anyway. A sunrise session is an easy yes.

Book before you leave home. Many American couples reach out once they have landed. By then, the best slots are often gone, and I only take one project a day.

Schedule it early in your stay. If the weather turns, we have room to move it.

What to wear. Fabrics that move, light or natural tones. The lagoon and the wood already do a lot. A flower crown, like Véronique's, adds the color.

As soon as you book, you receive my welcome guide: outfits, hair, makeup, what to expect. You arrive with no open questions.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Tipaniers pier in Moorea? At Hauru Point, on the northwest coast of Moorea, in front of the Les Tipaniers hotel. It faces two small motu across the lagoon.

What is the best time for photos at the Tipaniers pier? Sunrise or sunset. The light is softer, the lagoon richer in color, and the pier much quieter than in the middle of the day.

Is an anniversary a good occasion for a photo session in Moorea? One of the best. A couple who has known each other for years does not need to pose. The gestures are already there.

We are not comfortable in front of a camera. Is that a problem? Not at all. I do not pose people like models. I suggest a walk, a movement, something to say to each other. The rest comes from you.

How long does a signature session last? About an hour and a half. I never check my watch. If the light turns beautiful at the last minute, we stay.

Years later, still here

Véronique and Lolo flew home with pictures of this trip. And, without having to say it, with pictures of everything they built before it.

That is what writing love with light means.
